The rise and fall of Mansukh Shah Prashant Rupera | TNN | Mar 1, 2017, 04.00 AM ISTVadodara: In the early 1990s, Mansukh Shah, had just completed his dental studies from Ahmedabad. Shah, who belonged to a middle-class Jain family, started with a small dental practice on the second floor of an old building at Anandpura near SSG Hospital. But fortune was on his way when he purchased a piece of land at Piparia in Waghodia taluka in the late 1990s, where he started a dental college which expanded rapidly. As money poured in, with students taking admission in this college, he started Dhiraj General Hospital.

It was in 2003, he got permission to start a medical college which was the real breakthrough for him. This medical college started enrolling former professors from Baroda Medical College. Shah, who is said to be enjoying good connections with higher-ups in the Medical Council of India (MCI) - the regulatory body of medical education in the country, used to keep his finances under close wrap.

In medical fraternity of Gujarat, it is said that a former big shot of MCI, is his partner. In fact, nobody was allowed to meet him in his chamber or enter the campus, with a mobile phone or a video recorder. As Sumandeep Vidyapeeth, received deemed university status, Shah became its founder chancellor while family members and close friends were appointed to other posts of the university. The current president of MCI Dr Jayshree Mehta was the founder vice-chancellor of this university.

This deemed university has a sprawling campus which houses six constituent colleges including that of dental, physiotherapy, pharmacy, nursing and management apart from a general hospital. Two years back the university, even received an 'A' grade accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).
